چکیده

We propose a numerical method to solve general hyperbolic systems in any space dimension using forward Euler time stepping and continuous finite elements on non-uniform grids. The properties of the method are based on the introduction of an artificial dissipation that is defined so that any convex invariant sets containing the initial data is an invariant domain for the method. The invariant domain property is proved for any hyperbolic system provided a CFL condition holds. The solution is also shown to satisfy a discrete entropy inequality for every admissible entropy of the system. The method is formally first-order accurate in space and can be made high-order in time by using Strong Stability Preserving algorithms. This technique extends to continuous finite elements the work of Hoff [12, 13], and Frid [8].

Invariant Domains Preserving Arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian Approximation of Hyperbolic Systems with Continuous Finite Elements

A conservative invariant domain preserving arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian method for solving nonlinear hyperbolic systems is introduced. The method is explicit in time, works with continuous finite elements, and is first-order accurate in space. One original element of the present work is that the artificial viscosity is unambiguously defined irrespective of the mesh geometry/anisotropy and does...

Discontinuous Galerkin finite element methods for second order hyperbolic problems

In this paper, we prove a priori and a posteriori error estimates for a finite element method for linear second order hyperbolic problems (linear wave equations) based on using spacetime finite element discretizations (for displacements and displacement velocities) with (bilinear) basis functions which are continuous in space and discontinuous in time. We refer to methods of this form as discon...

Element Approximations to First-order Linear Hyperbolic Equations

Finite element approximations of the first-order hyperbolic equation U • Vu + au = / are considered on curved domains £2 C K2 . When part of the boundary of Í2 is characteristic, the boundary of numerical domain, Í2A , may become either an inflow or outflow boundary, so it is necessary to select an algorithm that will accommodate this ambiguity. This problem was motivated by a problem in acoust...
